October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Every October, the U.S. Department of Labor promotes National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present.

Stony Brook University is celebrating NDEAM with the following events:

Accommodation Requests: A Primer
Tuesday, October 3, 11 am
Location: via Zoom
Facilitators: Karin Martinsen and Natalie Mertens, Office of Equity and Access
Participants will learn the legal foundations of accommodations under the ADA and best practices for supervisors, as well as how Stony Brook University handles requests and manages ongoing accommodations.

Healthier U. Chair Yoga
Thursday, October 5, 11 am
Location: via Zoom
Facilitator: Cathrine Duffy, Healthier U Director
Chair yoga is a form of yoga done while sitting or standing and using a chair for support. Chair yoga can improve flexibility, concentration, strength and mood.

Silktide, Other Tools and Accessibility Success

Learn how Silktide, combined with other accessibility tools, can help you succeed in creating and fixing your sites and apps so they are usable for all people.

Fostering Inclusivity and Accessibility in the College Classroom

Learn strategies to create inclusive and accessible learning environments focusing on development of syllabi, assessments and instructional content.

Understanding Hidden Disabilities in the Workplace
Tuesday, October 17, 11 am

This session will highlight how awareness of hidden disabilities can help supervisors and coworkers build a more inclusive work environment.

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) Presents Pro Tips for Accommodation and Inclusion in the Hiring Process
Thursday, October 19, 11 am

Facilitators: Tracie DeFreitas, JAN Program Leader, Director of Training, Services, and Outreach
In this training, you will become familiar with the Job Accommodation Network service, receive practical guidance on disability inclusion for candidates and employees, and learn pro tips for engaging in the accommodation process.

Healthier U. Mindfulness

This session will provide an introduction to the life-changing benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

Employment of People with Disabilities: A Panel Discussion
Thursday, October 26, 11 am

Facilitator: Kristie Golden, Hospital Executive Administrator, Assistant Vice President, Operations, Neurosciences/Psychiatry, Stony Brook Medicine
Leaders from Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Medicine and from the larger medical and business community will discuss topics related to employing people with disabilities and the challenges disabled employees and applicants face.
