Hindrance or Help: Risks of Student Monitoring and Disproportionate Discipline

In recent years, there has been increasing conversation related to disciplinary applications of school technology and data use, including student activity monitoring software. For some, this increase in technology has resulted in disciplinary actions that range from suspensions to involvement with law enforcement.

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) conducted research that highlights this issue, with a focus on students with disabilities and their support system. The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) has also identified some possible impacts and risks of monitoring students with disabilities. While the use of technology and data is important in education today, there needs to be more discussion in how we use that information.

Join EALA, CDT, and NCLD for a discussion on the risks of student monitoring and disproportionate discipline.
