Empowering Young Minds: How Start Lighthouse Promotes Literacy and Inclusion
Introduction
Start Lighthouse, co-founded by Rina Madhani and Brittany Kramer in 2020, was born out of a desire to address the growing literacy crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in underserved communities. Through innovative literacy programs, this 2024 New Champion runner-up organization has made strides in closing literacy gaps by providing students access to culturally relevant books, promoting inclusivity, and fostering a love for reading in marginalized communities. Rina Madhani, Co-Founder and Executive Director, draws on her background as an educator and first-generation immigrant to build community-centered programs that ensure all children, regardless of background, can access meaningful educational resources.
Inspiration Behind Start Lighthouse
Rina’s journey with Start Lighthouse was inspired by her work as a teacher in the Bronx and her personal experiences as the child of immigrants who understood the transformative power of literacy. Witnessing the barriers families faced, Rina and her team launched programs designed to bridge gaps in literacy through the distribution of over 7,000 multicultural books and the development of “Woke Activists,” a social justice curriculum empowering students to think critically about relevant societal issues.
Programs That Foster Inclusion and Empowerment
Start Lighthouse operates multiple programs to create a holistic approach to literacy development:
Literacy Hubs: Start Lighthouse takes unused spaces, such as abandoned libraries, and repurposes them into vibrant literacy centers. These hubs, staffed with coordinators, provide daily, standards-aligned literacy lessons. The organization’s “Literacy Hub” model centers around accessibility, representation, and community pride.
Author and Artist Workshops: By connecting students with nationally recognized BIPOC authors and artists, Start Lighthouse encourages students to see themselves represented in the stories they read and create.
Family Engagement Programs: The organization extends its impact to students’ homes, equipping families with tools to foster a reading culture that endures beyond the classroom.
Navigating Challenges
Despite logistical challenges, Start Lighthouse secured essential partnerships, including collaborations with Scholastic and support from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. These alliances have allowed the organization to scale, gaining access to high-quality books and resources needed to build literacy hubs across New York City.
Impact and Success Stories
One notable impact of Start Lighthouse’s programming was seen during a family reading night, where families engaged in reading activities together, fostering a shared love of books. Educators have noted improved literacy engagement among students, especially English language learners, who benefit from small group sessions that prioritize individual needs.
Start Lighthouse exemplifies the power of culturally relevant and community-driven literacy initiatives. Rina’s work emphasizes literacy improvement and the importance of fostering an inclusive community where students feel seen, valued, and capable. Through programs like Literacy Hubs and “Woke Activists,” Start Lighthouse is breaking barriers and setting a standard for what inclusive education can achieve in underserved communities.
Reflections on the Journey
Rina Madhani’s experience with Start Lighthouse has reinforced the importance of community involvement and cultural relevance in literacy education. For her, the journey has highlighted that true educational equity requires programs that deeply resonate with students’ lived experiences. This understanding has driven Start Lighthouse to go beyond traditional literacy models, integrating cultural responsiveness and community pride into every facet of its programming.
Reflecting on the organization’s growth, Rina shares, “Our work has shown me that literacy is more than reading; it’s about building confidence, identity, and community. When students see themselves in the stories they read, their engagement and self-belief soar. We’re creating a space where every child feels their story is worth telling.”
The organization’s focus on partnerships has also taught Rina the power of collaboration in addressing complex educational challenges. Start Lighthouse’s success has been possible because of strong relationships with partners who share a commitment to literacy equity, whether through access to resources, financial support, or advocacy.

Advice for Other Literacy Advocates
Rina’s advice for others aiming to build similar initiatives is clear: center your programs around the unique needs and voices of the community you serve. “Authentic relationships with families, students, and educators have been crucial to our impact. Take time to listen, learn, and co-create solutions that reflect the diversity of your audience,” she emphasizes.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Rina envisions expanding Start Lighthouse’s literacy hubs to serve more communities and deepen family engagement through additional resources and bilingual staff. With plans to integrate social-emotional learning components into the curriculum, Start Lighthouse aims to address the holistic development of students, supporting both their academic and personal growth.
Big Takeaways
Start Lighthouse is more than a literacy organization, it is a catalyst for empowerment, community, and identity-building. For Rina Madhani, the greatest takeaway is the joy of seeing students embrace their potential and feel valued. “Our mission is to ensure every child, no matter where they’re from, has the opportunity to thrive.”
